Communication with your teachers was one key takeaway that I got from all of my conversations. Being there and making yourself visible. Make sure that you're always communicating with your teachers and letting them know what's going on at board meetings, what the district may change, and what decisions have been made that will affect them. Giving a quick update after a board meeting is far better than inaccurate information being spread by word of mouth.
Make sure that professional development is meaningful. Allow your teachers to have some say in what topics you want to cover during inservice. Mentoring for new teachers is also helpful. Giving new teachers a mentor they can talk to and bounce ideas off of is vital to keeping young teachers in the profession.
Make sure to show your staff that you appreciate them. Appreciation nights are great, but simple things like letting teachers out early once the kids leave on Fridays can have a significant impact as well. Thank them and show them that you care about what they're doing. Always listen to your teachers and make sure you're taking care of their needs, because teachers are hard to find and it is important to make them feel valued to keep them around.
